Con 12 riders y cuatro camaras nos fuimos a toda velocidad por la pista para este halloween con nuestras mejores mascaras! Esperemos que sea el primero de una tradición bien tuanis!

Urban Riot: ¿Cómo es su vida cotidiana como rider profesional?
Kevin Reimer: Mi vida como rider no es tan interesante jaja. Me levanto en la mañana, me aseguro de que se contesten los correos de Aera, veo si hay órdenes que enviar, llamo a la gente relacionada con eso, desayuno (granola y un batido) y empiezo mi día. Si hace sol me aseguro que algún momento del día lo pase patinando en “BP” (el mejor spot en Vancouver) y veo qué mas puedo hacer en el día. Si ando de viaje lo llevo día a día. Trato de patinar con quien me llame en Vancouver. Si hay oportunidad de un buen “bombing” me apunto, o si es skatepark ese día, le llego también.

Urban Riot: Cuéntenos sobre el proyecto de Aera Trucks. ¿Cómo empezó, cómo va, qué se viene?
Kevin Reimer: Aera Trucks fue y es el deseo de producir los mejores trucks del mercado. Más livianos, más precisos, más rápidos: mejores. Cuando empecé no había trucks que me funcionaran. No doblaban lo suficiente, no duraban, no eran livianos, o simplemente tenían algo raro que no me gustaba. Si se quiere algo bien hecho, hay que hacerlo uno mismo. Eso aprendí en este proceso. Estos días Aera está mejorando bastante. Me acabo de pasar a una bodega pequeña y contraté a Sarah de Abec11 (¡es buenísima!) y he estado trabajando en un diseño nuevo desde mi lesión. Con el tiempo van a ver más y más de Aera. ¡Tengo unas ideas que necesito poner en libertad!

Urban Riot: Usted y Dalua son muy cercanos. ¿Cómo es patinar con él?
Kevin Reimer: ¡Dalua es toda! De verdad lo considero uno de mis mejores amigos. Hemos tenido nuestros altos y bajos (cuando hemos mezclado la amistad y negocios, cosa difícil). Él es un alma buena pero pocos lo entienden. Siempre está para ayudar y se asegura de que las cosas se hagan bien. Ha sido un gran amigo y he aprendido mucho del mundo gracias a él. Es unos años mayor que yo entonces a menudo sabe mejor qué hacer. ¡Son las canas! Dalua me ha enseñado a ser una persona sólida y tener motivación para ser exitoso. Trabaja tan duro para estar donde está que me hace sentir que tengo que ponerle. Su empuje es increíble y creo que me ha ayudado en eso, aunque no se haya dado cuenta.

Urban Riot: ¿Si tuviera que escoger un rider para darle 1 contra 1 a quién escogería?
Kevin Reimer: Dependería de la pista. Algunos lugares favorecen a algunos riders. Creo que escogería a James Kelly porque se que los dos estaríamos sonriendo después de la bajada.

Urban Riot: ¿Quién diría es el mejor rider hoy por hoy?
Kevin Reimer: No hay un “mejor” rider. eso siempre está cambiando. Creo que James Kelly estaría muy alto en la lista. Su nivel me impresiona, sobretodo su velocidad, estilo y tácticas en switch. ¡Es un gran competidor!

Urban Riot: Cuéntenos un poco sobre su experiencia viviendo en el SkateHouse.
Kevin Reimer: Fue muy divertido, fue al puro principio de todo. James (Kelly), Louis (Pilloni), Dubes (Max Dubler) y yo estábamos viviendo ahí. ¡Era el mismo apartamento (2 cuartos) y era más o menos limpio en ese momento! Yo dormía en la sala, Dubes y James compartían cuarto y Louis tenía cuarto propio. La idea del SkateHouse no se había concretado todavía pero patinabamos todos los días y vacilábamos en la noche, que es en lo que consiste un skatehouse. Disfruté mi tiempo ahí, aprendí mucho a través de esos muchachos. ¡Espero visitarlos pronto!

Urban Riot: Usted diseñó su propia tabla, cuéntenos un poco qué buscaba y cómo lo consiguió.
Kevin Reimer: ¡La Killswitch! La tabla que más amo. Lo mismo que con los trucks, no pensaba que el diseño de las tablas hubiera avanzado lo suficiente. Siempre había tenido problemas con mi pie de adelante, se me resbalaba pegando pre-drifts en toeside. Además nunca pude decidir entre un top mount o drop trhough. Entonces pensé: Le hago un pequeño drop para sostenerse en los slides, un concave en W para sostener el pie de atrás y dar apoyo al frente. En el tail y nose un rounded concave para sostener los pies y colocarlos. El resultado fue una tabla que responde mejor. El resto fue afinar los detalles. Graham de Rayne pasó por 5 moldes diferentes con alrededor de 10 cambios en cada molde antes de llegar al final. ¡Fue un proceso largo pero lo valió!

Urban Riot: Lamentamos mucho su lesión. ¿Dentro de cuánto lo vamos a ver en las calles otra vez y qué ha estado haciendo este tiempo?
Kevin Reimer: Mi lesión fue bastante grave. El tobillo es una articulación muy complicada. Como se apoya todo el peso en ella es necesario que se cure al 100%. Me tomó mucha concentración y relajación para sobrevivir al proceso de rehabilitación. Pasé ese tiempo trabajando en Aera y arreglando una moto vieja que tengo (1993 Honda VFR). Por dicha tenía cosas que hacer mientras estaba en reposo, ¡sino me habría vuelto loco!

Urban Riot: Cuéntenos un poco sobre el proceso desde que comenzó a patinar hasta llegar a ser rider profesional y dos veces campeón mundial.
Kevin Reimer: El proceso tomó mucho tiempo e involucró muchos raspones y unos cuantos huesos rotos. Tuvimos que aprender las técnicas del piso hacia arriba, con muy poca influencia de otras partes. YouTube no existía, no tuvimos acceso a videos de otra gente haciendo lo que queríamos hacer. Comencé patinando por el barrio, disfrutando esas cuestas y patinando lo más rápido posible, aprendiendo a tirar slides y frenar. Pasé a cuestas más empinadas y fui a las primeras carreras. Me puse en contacto con la gente de Coast Longboarding. Despés empecé a encontrar otra gente que estaba tratando de hacer lo mismo que yo. Anduve con ellos y me metí en el mundo de las carreras, competí por primera vez. De ahí todo fue progresando. Hice los contactos correctos y conecciones con compañías mientras subía mi nivel y eso funcionó muy bien para mí. Entre más competía más crecía como rider. Entre más patinaba por las calles, también. Todo funcionó y me trajo a donde estoy.

Urban Riot: ¿Qué se viene para usted? ¿Cuáles son los planes para este año?
Kevin Reimer: En el 2012 me voy a enfocar más en mis metas personales, relacionadas a Aera principalmente. Voy a seguir viajando lo más que pueda, pero ir por el título no es una prioridad. Todavía me estoy recuperando, hasta el otoño del 2012, por lo que no hay razón de competir si no estoy en las mejores condiciones. Espero viajar y participar en eventos más pequeños y locales. Quiero conocer escenas que están entrando en el longboard mundial (¡como Costa Rica!). Me gustaría tener un carro-casa e ir de país en país algún día… Es cuestión de hacerlo. ¡Espero verlos a todos en el 2012!

Urban Riot: ¿Cuando va a venir a patinar a Costa Rica?
Kevin Reimer: Cuando me inviten o haya un evento. ¡De fijo me emocionaría mucho conocer esa escena!

Urban Riot: Being a pro-skateboarder, what is your daily life like?
Kevin Reimer: My daily life as a skateboarder isn’t that interesting, haha. I’m a bit of a homebody. I wake up in the AM, make sure that all the Aera emails have been answered and see if there are any orders to ship out. Call the necessary people who help me with my business to check up on things. I’ll have my breakfast (smoothie and granola) and get going with my day. If it’s sunny I just make sure that sometime in my day will be spent in the BPs (the best spot in Van) and then see what other things I can bust out that day. If I’m traveling, It’s all up in the air and goes day by day. I try to skate with whoever hits me up in Van. If someone has a sick offer for some high-speed bombing, I’ll usually make it happen, if it’s a park skating day, I’m there too.

Urban Riot: Tell us about the Aera Trucks project. How did it start, how is it going, what´s next?
Kevin Reimer: Aera Trucks was and is the desire to produce better trucks than anyone else on the market. Lighter, stronger, more accurate, faster, better. When I started there weren’t any trucks that really worked for my style… They didn’t turn enough, didn’t last, weren’t light enough, or just had some weird issue that I didn’t enjoy day to day. If you want something done right, you need to do it yourself is what I learned from this whole process. These days Aera is stepping it up big-time. I just moved into a very small warehouse, hired Sarah from Abec11 (who is awesome!), and have been working on a new design since my injury. As time goes on, you’ll see more and more coming out of Aera… I’ve got some ideas and they need to be set free!

Urban Riot: You and Dalua are very close, tell us a bit about skating with him. What have you learned from each other?
Kevin Reimer: Dalua is the man! I really think he’s one of my best friends. We’ve definitely had our ups and downs this year (when we’ve mixed business and friendship which is really hard). Dalua is a kind but often misunderstood soul. He’s always there to help out and make sure things are done right. He’s been a great friend and I’ve learnt a lot about the world from him. He’s a few years older than I am so he knows better than I do most of the time. “Cabelos brancos!” Dalua has taught me about being a solid person and to have a lot of drive to be successful. He works so hard to have what he has and I feel like I need to step it up when I see that. His push is insane, and I think he’s helped me a lot with mine, even if he didn’t mean to. You’ll have to ask Dalua what he’s learnt from me, I’m sure he’ll joke around about what he has learnt, if anything!

Urban Riot: If you had to pick one rider to go on a man to man race who would you pick?
Kevin Reimer: For a one on one race… It would be track dependant. Some places really favor another skater. I’d rather race James Kelly though. ‘Cause he’s rad and we’d both be smiling at the bottom.

Urban Riot: Who would you say is the best downhill skateboarder today?
Kevin Reimer: There is no “best’ downhill skateboarder. It’s always changing. I think James is really high up there though, his skating definitely impresses me every time. His speed and style and switch tactics are really what impress me the most. He’s a very competent racer to boot.

Urban Riot: You lived in the SkateHouse for a while. Tell us a bit about who was there at the time and about the whole experience.
Kevin Reimer: Yes, I did live in the Skatehouse for awhile. It was a lot of fun and it was in the fresh beginnings of it all. James (Kelly), Louis (Pilloni), Dubes (Brent Dubendorf) and I were inhabiting. It was the same apartment (2 bedroom) and was actually kinda clean then! I slept in the living room and Dubes and James shared a room, Louis had his own. The Skatehouse idea hadn’t really all come together yet, but we were out there skating everyday and having fun at night which is really what a skatehouse is all about. I enjoyed my time and became a better skater through the connection to all those boys. Can’t wait for my next visit!

Urban Riot: You designed your own board. Tell us about what you were after and how you got there.
Kevin Reimer: The Killswitch! The one board I love the most. The same as trucks, I didn’t think board design had really progressed to the highest level it could. I’d always had issues with my front foot sliding around while doing toeside pre-drifts and could never decide whether I liked a top mount or drop through board. I figured: Make a small drop to hold you in on big slides, create a W concave to hold the rear foot in place and offer arch support in the front. Fold in a rounded concave in the nose / tail to hold the feet in and locate them. The result was a board that really offered you better feedback. The rest was just mild tweaking to dial it in. Graham at Rayne went through 5 different moulds and probably 10 changes to each mould before we really settled on anything. It was a long process but well worth it!

Urban Riot: We were sorry to hear about your injury. How long before we see you shredding again and what have you been doing during this time?
Kevin Reimer:My injury was really quite bad. The ankle is a very complicated joint and since all your weight rests on it it is imperative that it heals 100%. It took a lot of concentration and relaxation to survive that healing process. I spent my time working on Aera and restoring an old motorcycle I have (1993 Honda VFR). Thankfully I had some things to work on while I was down or else I would’ve gone crazy!

Urban Riot: You are a two times world champion! Tell us a bit about your personal process as to getting there. From when you started skateboarding to the successful pro rider you are now.
Kevin Reimer: The process from starting as a skateboarder to becoming a competent rider took a long time and involved a lot of road rash, and a few broken bones. We had to learn all the techniques from the ground up, with very little influence from other parts of the world. Youtube didn’t exist so we didn’t have access to any videos of other people doing what we wanted to. I started out by skating around my hood, and enjoying all those hills going as fast as I could and learning to slide and stop. Moved on to bigger hills and watched my first races and connected with Coast Longboarding. I then started to find others who were trying to learn what I was too. Hung out with those guys enough to get into the racing scene, and entered my first race. It was all progression from there on. I had to create the correct connections to companies while growing as a skater, and that has worked out very well for me. As I raced more, I became better and better. The more I rode around the streets, the better I became. It all worked together to bring me to where I am today.

Urban Riot: What’s coming up next for you? What are your plans for the year?
Kevin Reimer: In 2012 I’ll be focusing on my own personal goals, which are more connected to Aera than anything else. I’ll still travel as much as possible, but snagging the world title is not as high up on my list. I’m still healing and will be healing up until mid-summer or even Fall of 2012 so there is no reason to pursue the racing as much as possible if I’m not at the top of my game. I hope to travel to smaller local and grassroots events. I want to see more of the small scenes that are just entering in on the scene (like Costa Rica!). I hope to get an RV and go from country to country one day… Just a matter of making it happen. Hope to see you all soon in 2012!

Urban Riot: When are you coming to skate the hills of Costa Rica?!
Kevin Reimer: I’ll come to Costa Rica when I get the invite or if there’s an event going on. Definitely stoked to see that scene!

Here’s our interview with the 22 year old, 2 times world champ and Aera Truck founder Kevin Andrew Reimer: K-Rimes! for all you english-speaking visitors!

Urban Riot: How long have you been skating?
Kevin Reimer: I’ve been skating for almost 10 years now… Skating downhill for 8 of those years.

Urban Riot: What’s your skating style?
Kevin Reimer: My skating style… I’d say I’m “fast” freerider. I’m not that tech, I don’t like to ride slow and do little tech switch backside slides or things like that. I’d much rather go SUPER fast and blast huge heelside stand ups and hand down toesides. Hitting up the airs or the features, slashing all the banks at super speed; those are the things that make me smile. My favorite part about hitting the same run over and over for years is to become consistent, banging off that classic run that makes you smile while going bigger and bigger. Over the years I found that inevitably going faster makes wheels slide smoother. I started skating at a time when we couldn’t even pendulum or coleman slide so I didn’t have that base built for me. I had to learn it on my own and as such I stuck with a lot of those older, but perhaps faster techniques.

Urban Riot: Why did you start longboarding?
Kevin Reimer: I started longboarding because it was the perfect way to combine my love for skateboards, and my love for ripping around town. When I was young I rode my bicycle, rollerblades, or basically any “faster-than-walking apparatus” instead of walking. Vancouver has a great bunch of small hills all over the city and that makes it easy to get around when you can roll. I tried a longboard by the beach one day and it was the best feeling skateboard I’d ever stood on. I started saving for one right after!

Urban Riot: When you started skateboarding, did you go straight into downhill skating?
Kevin Reimer: When I first started skating, I was originally interested in the street aspect of it. I wanted to ollie, grind, kickflip, all that. Ledges, stair sets. I found that I wasn’t particularly good at fliptricks, but I could ollie super fat. I stuck with what was fun and just ollied around over speedbumps, recycling bins and sewer grates. I tried my best to push around everywhere too, but the hard wheels were so slow! Longboarding hadn’t really picked up that much at that time. Coast Longboarding was just starting up!

Urban Riot: How often do you skate on a weekly basis?
Kevin Reimer: Whenever possible, I try to skate every day! These days I’m a bit spoilt though. I usually wait for the dry days here in Vancouver and haven’t been riding in the rain as much as I used to. I’m sure I’ll be getting back into it again now. We have an amazing bus system here in Vancouver so you can ride all the hills solo. That’s what I did for years.

Urban Riot: What’s your best longboarding experience/story so far?
Kevin Reimer: Hard to say! The world I’ve seen through downhill skateboarding has been so incredible. I think the best trip I’ve been on was when I went to the Canary Islands with James Kelly. The hills were INSANE and had the best pavement I’ve skated on to date. The locals hooked it up huge and helped us out all along the way. James and I rented a motorcycle for a few days and shredded all the local hills on that too (check out Skatehousemedia’s “Island Times” video!).

Urban Riot: Worst accident?
Kevin Reimer: Worst accident happened in May this year. Shattered ankle. Insanely difficult injury to heal from. I’m still not 100% and it’s been 4+ months. Hoping to be 100% for 2012.

Urban Riot: What do you like the most about downhill skateboarding?
Kevin Reimer: I love the connection with the world I get, and the smiles and laughs it brings out for me. Every time I go out and shred my favorite hills (especially these days so long after my injury) I find myself laughing, smiling, talking to myself as I descend. The feeling of being in total control and sliding and slashing in all those places that you know so well. Consistent enjoyment. There’s really no other form of skating (or any sport I can think of) where you can devour that much pavement and area. We really have no limits!

Urban Riot: Piece of advice for someone who is just starting in speedboarding?
Kevin Reimer: I’d suggest that you go out and just enjoy it at your level. Whatever makes you happy is what matters the most. Learn to stop! Sliding, footbraking, and any braking technique are what will save your life when you need it most.

Urban Riot: Advice for someone who is a bit more advanced in speedboarding?
Kevin Reimer: Go to events and travel the world. Experience what others experience everyday!

Urban Riot: What’s your take on the world longboarding scene and the community as a whole?
Kevin Reimer: Amazement! The world is full of the exact same people. Downhill addicts and longboarding lovers. It doesn’t matter where you go, we’re all the same. Doesn’t matter if you all speak a different language, you can all connect on one thing. Loving skateboarding.

Urban Riot: What’s the perfect spot for speedboarding?
Kevin Reimer: Fast, turny, needs braking, sharp but smooth pavement, good friends and a ride to the top!

Urban Riot: Who is your longboarding inspiration?
Kevin Reimer: That’s hard to say. I think everyone has had an influence on my skating. These days I keep looking at the younger skaters and their style. They have a lot of skill and were so lucky to have the base built to learn from. The creativity of the young riders these days is really inspiring!

Urban Riot: Do you ride different styles?
Kevin Reimer: I love to ride skateboards, period. I’ll ride in the park, shred slalom, carve around town, push long-ish distance, and even bust some really ugly cross-steps sometimes. It just depends on how I feel that day.

Urban Riot: Are you more of a race addict or a freeride kind of skater?
Kevin Reimer: I lean more towards freeriding, but I still do love to race. If I have the option to go bomb a super fast straight hill or freeride the hills, I will definitely pick freeriding. I love the challenge of racing, and how “free” freeriding is. They compliment each other.

Hablamos con el canadiense Kevin Andrew Reimer, conocido como “K-Rimes”. Este rider de 22 años ya se ha consagrado dos veces como campeón mundial y fundó su propia marca de trucks, “Aera”. Veamos qué tiene para decirnos.

Urban Riot: ¿Hace cuanto patina?
Kevin Reimer: Llevo casi 10 años patinando, 8 de esos downhill.

Urban Riot: ¿Cuál diría es su estilo en el patín?
Kevin Reimer: Yo diría que mi estilo es un freeride rápido. No soy tan técnico. No me gusta andar despacio y pegar pequeños backsides en switch o cosas así. Prefiero por mucho andar muy rápido y sacar un heelside gigante o un hand down toeside. Pegar vuelos o despedazar banks a toda velocidad, esas son las cosas que me hacen sonreír. Lo que más me gusta es la consistencia de darle siempre un mismo run cada vez más duro. Con los años me he dado cuenta de que inevitablemente la velocidad hace que las ruedas derrapen más suave. Cuando empecé a patinar no podíamos pegar pendys o colemans, no tuvimos esa base. Tuve que aprender por mi cuenta y por eso me quedé con esas otras técnicas: más viejas pero tal vez más rápidas.

Urban Riot: ¿Por qué empezó a longboardear?
Kevin Reimer: Empecé porque era la manera perfecta de combinar mi amor por las patinetas y andar por la ciudad. Cuando era pequeño siempre anduve en bici, patines, o cualquier cosa en la que andiuviera más rápido que caminando. Vancouver tiene muchas cuestas por todo lado, lo que hace fácil andar rodado. Probé un longboard en la playa y tuve el sentimiento de que era la mejor pati en la que me había montado. ¡Empecé a ahorrar de una!

Urban Riot: ¿Cuando empezó a patinar fue directo al downhill?
Kevin Reimer: Originalmente estaba muy interesado en el “street”. Quería pegar ollies, grinds, kickflips y todo eso. Me di cuenta de que no era particularmente bueno pegando flips pero tenía un buen ollie. Me quedé con lo que hacía bien y empecé a brincarme muertos, basureros y alcantarillas. Trataba de empujar a todo lado, pero las ruedas duras eran muy lentas. El longboard no estaba tan desarrollado en ese momento. Coast Longboarding estaba empezando a penas.

Urban Riot: ¿Cada cuánto patina?
Kevin Reimer: ¡Cuando puedo trato de patinar todos los días! Últimamente ando un poco quitado. Normalmente espero a que pare la lluvia en Vancouver y no he estado dándole tanto con lluvia. De fijo pronto le vuelvo a dar. Tenemos un excelente sistema de buses en Vancouver, entonces uno puede ir a patinar solo. ¡Eso es lo que hice por años!

Urban Riot: ¿Hasta ahora cuál ha sido su mejor experiencia?
Kevin Reimer: ¡Está difícil! El mundo que he visto gracias al downhill ha sido increíble. Creo que el mejor viaje ha sido con James Kelly a las Islas Canarias. Las cuestas eran buenísimas y el pavimento ha sido el mejor en el que he patinado hasta la fecha. James y yo alquilamos una moto y anduvimos por las cuestas en moto también.

Urban Riot: ¿Peor accidente?
Kevin Reimer: El peor accidente me pasó en mayo de este año. Me despedacé el tobillo. Una lesión de la que es muy difícil recuperarse. Todavía no estoy al 100% y ya llevo más de 4 meses. Espero estar al 100 en el 2012.

Urban Riot: ¿Qué es lo que más le gusta del longboard?
Kevin Reimer: Me encanta la conección con el mundo y las alegrías y sonrisas que me provoca. Cada vez que salgo a patinar en mis cuestas favoritas me río, hablo sólo y sonrío mientras voy bajando (sobretodo estos días después de la lesión) El sentimiento de estar en total control mientras derrapo en esos lugares que conozco tan bien: es disfrutar consistentemente. Realmente no hay otro deporte en el que se pueda despedazar así el pavimento. ¡De verdad no tenemos límites!

Urban Riot: ¿Un consejo para los que están empezando en el patín?
Kevin Reimer: Yo sugeriría que disfruten a su nivel. ¡Aprendan a frenar! Slides, footbreak y cualquier otra técnica para frenar que pueda salvarle la vida cuando lo necesite.

Urban Riot: ¿Y para alguien un poco más avanzado?

Urban Riot: ¿Qué opina de la comunidad de longboard a nivel mundial?
Kevin Reimer: ¡Me impresiona! El mundo está lleno de gente igual. Adictos al downhill y amantes del longboard. No importa a dónde vaya, todos somos iguales. No importa el idioma que hable, todos estamos conectados por una cosa. El amor al patín.

Urban Riot: ¿Spot perfecto para speed?
Kevin Reimer: ¡Rápido, con curvas, que necesite frenar, buen pavimento, amigos y ride para arriba!

Urban Riot: ¿Quién es para usted una inspiración en el longboard?
Kevin Reimer: Es difícil decidir. Creo que mucha gente ha influido en mí. Últimamente veo a los riders más jóvenes y su estilo. Tienen mucha habilidad y son muy dichosos de haber tenido una base ya establecida. ¡La creatividad de esos jóvenes es inspiradora!

Urban Riot: ¿Patina diferentes estilos?
Kevin Reimer: Amo patinar, punto. Patino en parques, le doy al slalom, carveo por la ciudad, empujo distancias más o menos largas e inclusive saco un cross-step bastante feo a veces. Depende de cómo me sienta.

Urban Riot: ¿Qué se considera más? ¿Un adicto a las carreras o un rider más al suave, de freeride?
Kevin Reimer: Me inclino más al freeride, pero igual me encantan las carreras. Si tengo la opción de ir a darle a una recta super rápida o freeridear por las montañas de fijo escojo el freeride. Me gusta el reto de las carreras y la libertad del freeride. Se complementan.
